Hi, my name is Ryan Schumacher, and I founded Schushine Editorial Services in 2023 after fifteen years as an in-house editor for a renowned regional history journal and book publisher. In my nearly two decades of editing, I have gained experience with practically every aspect of book production, from acquisitions to editing, proofreading, marketing, and even indexing and design. Today, I specialize primarily in developmental editing, copyediting, and substantive editing for individuals and publishers.
History and editing have been entwined passions of mine since my college days, when I worked on the undergraduate history journal at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. While completing my master’s degree at the University of Kansas, I discovered that I wanted to make editing my career when my colleagues came to me for help with their writing. After earning a certificate in scholarly publishing at Arizona State University, I worked for the Texas State Historical Association, where I oversaw the publication of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly and several award-winning books. Since going into business for myself, I have benefited greatly from the guidance and advice of fellow editors, and I am a member of the Northwest Editors Guild and the Editorial Freelancers Association. In 2025, I earned a certificate in developmental editing from the University of Washington. Through every phase of my career, The Chicago Manual of Style has been a boon companion.
In my life away from the editing desk, I enjoy reading (mainly history, fiction, and books about nature), listening to music, attending concerts and comedy shows, watching movies, cooking (and eating!), and hiking. I am a native of the American Midwest and spent many years toggling between Wisconsin and Kansas. After a short stopover in Arizona and a long one in Texas, I now live in the Pacific Northwest, where I enjoy exploring the forests and seaside with my wife and two dogs.
